What is a home kitchen?
A home kitchen is a small, permitted food business run from a private home โ your neighbor's kitchen, legally selling you dinner.
Three legal flavors
- Cottage food operations โ shelf-stable goods like baked goods, jams, and granola. Legal in nearly every state. Badged ๐ฅง Cottage Food; preorder and pickup only.
- Microenterprise home kitchens โ full hot meals cooked at home, like a tiny restaurant. Legal in a growing number of states and counties. Badged ๐ณ Home Kitchen โ Meals; these take reservations.
- Food freedom laws โ a few states let home cooks sell almost anything directly to informed buyers.
- Street food โ sidewalk and mobile vendors are their own track (๐ฎ), walk-up only โ they do not cook from home kitchens.
State vs. county โ know the difference
In some states the rules are set statewide. In others โ like California's MEHKO program โ counties opt in one by one, so a kitchen can be legal in one county and not the next.
Every state guide on this site labels who runs the program and uses that state's own terms for it, so you always know where the rules come from. Browse the state guides โ
About our listings
Every listing carries its track badge and one of two tiers:
- Verified permit โ the kitchen's permit appears in public records we've checked.
- Community-listed โ listed on a home-kitchen platform or directory, permit not yet independently verified.
Listings show city or neighborhood only โ never home addresses.
